Norma Jeane Mortenson (her birth name) was eventually taken in by her mother’s best friend and it was there she became a victim of molestation. Her father was never in the picture and her mother on the other hand was mentally unstable to care for her. During her short-lived career, The Niagara (1953) star’s films grossed more than $200 million. Monroe was famous as the Hollywood sex symbol and for her tragic personal life. She was an actress, a comedian and a model. It is not a secret that Marilyn Monroe is one of America’s most enduring iconic figures. From an early age, they are trained to understand and master these special talents, not so they can use them for good, but so as to effectively wield them as weapons. It might be the ability to harness fire, water, or even metal, or it might be the gift of mind reading, just to name a few. Not only do the Silvers have silver blood running through their veins, but each one of them is also born with X-Men like super-human powers. Reds live in poverty, while Silvers live as nobles who deem it their right to treat all Reds as dirt beneath their feet.Īnd I guess it’s pretty easy to keep another group of people under your thumb when it’s not a fair fight because these Silvers are not your average, everyday nobles. Reds are deemed inferior to Silvers, not because of the color of their skin, but rather, because of the color of the blood that flows through their veins. I’ve been able to work with clients from all over the globe, using watercolor to provide illustrations for large brands, as well as creative stationery for events like beautiful high-end weddings. This infatuation rapidly turned into an important part of my career as an artist and designer. With the correct materials, the process was so enjoyable that I wanted to learn more. But when my profession as a calligrapher and designer began to take off, I came across the right watercolor supplies-and something changed for me. And sure, I’d dabbled with watercolor in elementary school. My mom and both of my grandmothers were acrylic painters, and although I’d tried my hand at painting a few times, I would definitely have considered myself OK at best. I put in countless hours discovering all the ins and outs. I fell in love with watercolor and began to study it. When I wasn’t painting, I was thinking about painting. I know- dramatic, right? Well, it’s true. You know the feeling when you’ve fallen in love and you can’t stand to be away from that person? This was my story with watercolor. It’s a visual medium that moves around with ease, exploding and bursting into surrounding strokes, creating texture and depth that can’t be found in any other type of media. Watercolor is wildly uncontrollable and at the same time containable. Its beautiful luminous quality is pure delight. I was so excited to get my hands on an early review copy of Four Aunties and a Wedding, albeit slightly nervous in case it didn’t live up to expectations, given how much I loved Dial A for Aunties. Whilst it can be read as a standalone novel I would strongly recommend reading Dial A for Aunties first, in order to better understand both the background to the story and the dynamics of Meddy’s crazy family. Even though there’s no dead body hidden in the freezer this time, for better or worse, it’s certainly going to be a day she’s never going to forget…įour Aunties and a Wedding is the sequel to the 2021 novel, Dial A for Aunties (see my review here). …But is it even a wedding if nobody gets killed?Īlthough when her meddling aunties get involved, Meddy knows her wedding is going to be anything but quiet. She’s found the dress, got the dream venue at Christ Church College, Oxford, plus having a destination wedding comes with the added bonus of not having to invite her very large extended family. After getting away with literal murder, Meddy can’t wait to settle down and marry the love of her life, Nathan. Kingdom-shaking danger is brewing in these lands, and she may be the only one who can save the Four Kingdoms. But despite the failure that brought her here, Cassie can't afford to give up. But meeting Aurora isn't enough-Cassie wants to prove her worth. Eager to meet the great spymaster, Aurora, she jumps at the chance to travel to her distant kingdom. Cassie knows she was made for more than a life buried away in her uncle's remote forest estate. These fantasies were literary models for women authors. Women had to negotiate with the male fantasies of the female, which were either of the submissive female-as-angel or the dangerous female-as-monster. The early nineteenth century women writers were working from within a male vision of creativity. Hence their reading of authors like Austen, the Brontes, Mary Shelley, George Eliot and Emily Dickinson in Madwoman is mainly an analysis of the social conditions of authors’ lives, the literary canon and the archives. Their interest, like Showalter, is in the material conditions of the woman writer’s creativity. Like Showalter, Gilbert and Gubar have analysed the nineteenth century for the position of the woman novelist in The Madwoman in the Attic (1979), the 2-volume No Man’s Land (1987-89) and their edition of The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women (1985). Key Ideas of Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubarīy NASRULLAH MAMBROL on Decem Since the rediscovery of the Poetic Edda in the seventeenth century, its poetry has fascinated artists as diverse as Thomas Gray, Richard Wagner, and Jorge Luis Borges." "This is the first complete translation to be published in Britain for fifty years, and it includes a scholarly introduction, notes, a genealogy of the gods and giants, and an index of names. The heroic poems trace the exploits of the hero Helgi and his valkyrie bride, the tragic tale of Sigurd and Brynhild's doomed love, and the terrible drama of Sigurd's widow Gudrun and her children." "Many of the poems predate the conversion of Scandinavia to Christianity, allowing us to glimpse the pagan beliefs of the North. Its academic reception: Although Crawford markets his translation heavily on his Youtube channel, it has not exactly been embraced by academics. The first edition does have a couple of typos in, but the latest print looks perfect. Crawford, however, swaps it for his original Cowboy Hávamál. Jackson Crawford has completed a superb job at translating the Poetic Edda into a book that is easy to read and to me, far more accessible than any other version. The mythological poems explore the wisdom of the gods and giants, narrating the adventures of the god Thor against the hostile giants and the god's rivalries amongst themselves. Most translations include a minimum of what Crawford includes here, and nearly every translation of the Poetic Edda contains Atlamál.
